Ok, I understand the government want to deter people from buying gas guzzlers but they're really lost the plot on this one.
We've got a Saab 9-5 estate Aero. Registered in 2002. CO2 emmissions = 240g/km.
If we were to buy road tax now for a year it would cost £210.

But if you look at the proposed rates for next year and 2010 it's going to rocket: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Nl1/News...2008/DG_073093
Our Saab falls into tax band L so it will go from £210 to £415 next year, then £455 the year after!!!
That's just nuts. So what does Mr Brown suggest we do with our car? Scrap it? Burn it? Buy a new one? Sell it to someone else to ruin the environment? None of these things are good for the planet, so basically we're stuck with it and therefore the tax hike!
Remember the new rates apply for all cars registered after 1st march 2001 - so this isn't to deter people buying these cars in the first place - it's to rake in more tax from those with one!
"A green tax that's unavoidable is just another tax!"
We're already paying more than the rest of Europe for our fuel - despite North Sea oil - and that's 100% because of tax.
It's really no wonder people are cynical when it comes to so called green taxes. Mr Brown will take more cash off car owners "to protect the environment" then they'll build another runway at Heathrow (let's not worry about the environment here, they get loads of money from airports!

To find out your car's CO2 emissions, dig out your Car's registration certificate - it should have it on there. Then look up your car's band here. You could well be in for a shock.

Expect a U-turn sometime soon - or it's bye-bye Labour - you've lost the plot.
You've been found out and we'll never believe you again when you talk green taxes.

thank goodness i do think its damn unfair though they should concentrate their efforts in sorting out china and the industry pollutants over there i watched something the other night about it being a month before the olympics and the area is covered in smog difficult to breath ect
