Default Do you leave tips for restaraunt staff

Was wondering this the other day. I listened to a report on the radio saying that some restauraunts keep the tips we give to the waiter / waitress.

Service charges may be diverted into a restaurant’s takings without the customer knowing trade union, Unite has told the BBC. Should there be a more transparent system of tipping?

Some companies are said to keep a percentage of every service charge paid while others, including the Italian chain Carluccio's, expect tips to take pay up to the legal minimum.

Groups found to hold back a proportion of staff tips include Pizza Express - which keeps 8% - and The Real Eating Company gourmet food chain in Sussex, which retains 22%.

The Real Eating Company defended the company's tips policy, saying it reflected the administrative burden of distributing tips among staff.

We took the kids to Frankies and Bennys the other night, and when it came to tipping, we added it to the chip and pin machine. (It asks you if you want to add a tip). But straight after I wondered if they waitress would actually get it.

If it was going to the company then there's no chance I'll do it in the future.

Have you done table service? Do you tip? What do you think of companies taking the tips?

    I always leave a tip.

Think it's shocking if they're used to make up minimum wage... they are legally required to pay min wage so regardless of whether people leave tips or not should pay it themselves.

i used to wait on tables and we always got our tips, but we shared it betweek all the waitresses, and now when i go to a resturant i always make sure ive got change in my pocket so i can hand it directly to whoever served me, that way there is no way the company can keep it,

I've never known it with people who have worked in the industry. But I don't know any that's worked for big companies.

Always tip too, and more when the service is really good - that's what it's all about isn't it? Rewarding good service. The thought the company would cream it off, just doesn't sit right.
