one final comment on the smoking thing - am sorry to hear about Gran with cancer - but my brother has serrious scirosis of the liver brought on by alcohol which will probably kill him too - not nice to see either and i would imagine even worse for my mother!
I guess my argument is pubs can choose whether to allow kids in -wheyher to limit parents to 2 drinks etc and people can choose whether to use those pubs.
No such choice exists for smoking, some of us like smoky pubs, don't mind smelling like an ashtray - its better than having to go home early cos i'm soaked from standing outside to have a fag. If landlords were allowed to choose i'm sure there would be smoking AND non smoking pubs -people could choose which they went too as it is this law justs makes the rights of smokers to choose less important than those of non smokers - discrimination
At ,least parents ,if they don't like the 2 drink rule can go to a pub that doesn't operate it - smokers on the other hand are treated like outcasts where ever they go.
The hypocracy of non smokers is what anoys me most tho -
people who are exercise their right to choose to pour this down their throats -
    Quote from wikipedia
"In layman's terms, the word alcohol (Arabic: الكحل, "al-kuḥl") usually refers to ethanol, also known as grain alcohol or (older) spirits of wine, or to any alcoholic beverage. Ethanol is a colorless, volatile liquid with a mild odor which can be obtained by the fermentation of sugars. (Industrially, it is more commonly obtained by ethylene hydration — the reaction of ethylene with water in the presence of phosphoric acid.[1]) Ethanol is the most widely used depressant in the world, and has been for thousands of years"
"Ethanol in the form of alcoholic beverages has been consumed by humans since pre-historic times, for a variety of hygienic, dietary, medicinal, religious, and recreational reasons. The consumption of large doses result in drunkenness or intoxication (which may lead to a hangover as the effect wears off) and, depending on the dose and regularity of use, can cause acute respiratory failure or death and with chronic use has medical repercussions. Because alcohol impairs judgment, it can often be a catalyst for reckless or irresponsible behavior -"

are worried because they might breathe in the smoke from someone who chooses to exercise their right to choose to smoke!

Both smoking and drinking cost the NHS a fortune only one has been banned
The NHS are debatting refusing to treat people who are overweight or smoke - their biggest saving would be to refuse to treat alcohol related casesbut no mention of that.
whetherspoons is maybe introducing this rule - there are some pubs that refuse kids full stop and others that actively encourage kids(we have one with a wackeywarehouse specially for kids open til 9) so parents and non parents (who IMO tend to be less tolerant of kids - being a parent tends to make us more forgiving (it could be our kid doing it next ) can choose to go to whichever suits their requirements.
I Think its unfair that smokers have been singled out to be piliaried - we can't choose a pub that suits our requirements - there aren't any .
Yes we cost the nhs money when we get sick - we all get sick tho - and there are other things that people choose to do that cost far more -
yes passive smoking does affect others but so does "depending on the dose and regularity of use, can cause acute respiratory failure or death and with chronic use has medical repercussions. Because alcohol impairs judgment, it can often be a catalyst for reckless or irresponsible behavior "
and so do people like me who ride motorbikes round fields come to that anyone who drives (some driving may be necessary but how many of us drive 1/4 mile to shops because can't be bothered to walk.
The green brigade will tell you we're all poisoning the whole world with our rubbish, our emissions, our bye products, etc
Frankly i'm more worried about getting run over by a drunk driver, or stabbed in the town centre by a drunk because i walk the wrong shape upside down, or being flooded out by global warming since i live on a flood plane than i am about getting lung cancer.
what's next bansun beds or refuse to treat people with skin cancer if they've ever sunbathed or used a sun bed
Ban sun beds - they're environmentaly unfriendly so damage my air and health and they are bound to increase the likely hood of skin cancer so cost the NHS in the long run
So to sum up (lol) i think whetherspoons should be allowed to make this choice of rules (people who object have the right to go somewhere else) its just a shame the same fairness isn't widespread
Public houses should always be allowed to choose who they cater for - unfortunately as it stands they can choose who they cater for as long as its not smokers.
If non smokers feel that the current law reflectsthe popular belief then why not refute the law and let landlords decide - if more people use non smoking pubs then there will be more non smoking pubs it wouldn't be business sense not too - however some pubs would IMO thrive on being smoking pubs and non smokers could choose not to use them - at least everybody would have the right to choose - something that has been taken from smokers as it stands

I don't think pubs are the right places for kids, ok its different in the summer to go and have a pub lunch etc, but if you want to spend your time getting pissed get a babysitter so the kid can do something more useful or educational with their time rather than watch you get pissed. How are parents meant to take care of their child when they have had too much to drink? If you can afford to go to the pub for hours you can afford a babysitter

Oh I like a pub meal & can only get them at pubs Why not have place where you can get a nice meal & a drink all year not just summer It is a small handful that gets other people looked down upon though for doing it.

I love the wacky warehouse pubs, child friendly, nice compfortable resturant area and of course a play area to takethe kids not just a day for you.

Although I liked these pubs prior to baby of course (just needed a LO to go to the wacky place lmao) ... the one that use to be near us was very nice & laid back not a rowdy dirty pub to go get drunk in really.

It's completely wrong, everyones alcohol level is different so limiting the drinks is ridiculous, obviously stop serving if they are plastered but otherwise its a joke...

i can understand the rule for people with young kids but i was in here a couple of weeks ago for my brothers birthday with my brother his mates my dad, my other half and my 16 year old sister who was staying with me a few days, my sister drinking coke, i only had 1 alcoholic drink and the others had a few drinks we weren't causing any trouble or noise. we were there 2.5 hours when one of the bar staff come over and told my sister she had to leave(no one else just my sister). this was out of order in my eyes.
