Default School meals - what do you do?

According to the BBC News website:

    Pupils 'shunning healthier meals'

Jamie Oliver says healthier school meals must continue

Healthier school meals are being shunned by many pupils, with figures published showing that 20% fewer meals are being served in secondary schools.

Do you think meals are now too bland? Or do you think that it's important to get tough on your kids as healthier food is important? Are school meals too expensive? Do your kids prefer packed lunches? Are schools right to encourage healthier eating? If so where are they going wrong (because something is)?

    Your opinion matters!

We had 3 seperate areas at our school for fast food like chicken burgers and hotdogs, traditional meals like lasagne and then the healthy bit with rolls and sandwiches.

Trouble was you had to be there early or you'd be left with a rubbish selection. One day I went in late and ended up with a ham sandwich which gave me food poisoning. I always ate unhealthily until the last couple of years at school. Traditional meals were still quite popular though (especially on a tuesday for smiley faces and spaghetti).

I don't think getting rid of the fast food would make a difference - kids would easily and go and get something even more unhealthy from the chippy (deep fried pizza mmmm).

But considering the number that actually had school meals, there just wasn't enough for everyone and you could be left with a bottle of water.

Will somebody please get a bloody great poll and wack this a****le around the head and shove salad crap down his throat till he pukes it back up.

Sorry but this man makes me so angry. KIDS WONT EAT THIS CRAP.

Either kids eat & eat what they always have had, or they starve avoiding these un tasty health food fads.

Sorry but I don't agree with the post above (didn't see who posted it and I'm on the blackberry so can't check lol) I think its schools and parents responsibilities to promote healthy eating, if you don't feed kids unhealthy food they won't become accustomed to it, I cook everything from scratch, no processed anything in the kids food, makes my 7 year old hyper beyond belief, so for the past 6 years my kids have only really had healthy food, the result is kids that are not even slightly overweight, they have the energy needed to play out doors instead of sitting in front of the tv and now they choose healthy food over junk food!
My kids have packed lunches because 1) the food at school just isn't up to my standards and 2) its too bloody expensive! 9 quid per child per week is a rip off!

    That post would be mine.

Do you work? Are you a single parent? If not then that is a consideration you have to allow for many parents.

Myself, i have a partner & 3 kids and another on the way.

They are all perfect weight and they dont eat strict healthy meals. Dont get me wrong they dont eat junk all the time but i will not turn into one of these parents who love being the governments lap dog.

Kids need fatty foods, kids need fizzy drinks. Aslong as your ensuring they have the excersise etc, so they can burn it off, then i dont see a problem.

It all a load of crap..

I have eaten junk all my life im on my 4th child and i weigh 8 1/2 stone! Everyone i know eats crap & are not fat with health issues!!

Its all a load of hype to make you purchase more expensive products which therfore puts extra taxes in to labours products.

Im not saying healthy eating is bad, i cook loads of pasta and make stuff like pies, lasagna, spag bol etc.. Sunday roast every sunday. But i think obsesive healthy eating is brain washing.

There was not a sniff of this healthy eating fasanation when i was growing up & there was no obesity problem then! How come now this crazy fad is all the rage, we have obesity?

Its the parents who it fall down to not the teachers or schools. As long as kids are eating big macs everyday then i dont see a problem.

Would you rather your children went to school and came home starving every day because they dont like this new crap served at schools?

Your kids are fine because they obviously have you who has implied this diet & has the time and the cash to keep to it. Many parents dont have this luxury, so why should you stand their on your soapbox & pass judgement!

I'm in two minds about the healthy school meals, while I agree with the basic idea I don't think it's being put into practice properly.

My oldest has just started Senior school today and she gets a choice of healthy salads, pasta etc... and also can choose burgers (made on school premises and griddled), fries and cakes. This is ideal I think as the kids' are still getting tastes of fattier foods but in a healthier way - if you see what I mean.

The total opposite side of the coin is my 8 year old who is still in Juniors. Her school doesn't have its own kitchen and the dinners are shipped in from another local school - which is fine when pizza, smiley faces and stew is on the menu but pre-prepared food like fish and lamb chops are supposed to be eaten immediately after cooking so the long standing time just makes the food like slop.

Personally I'm not organised enough to prepare the kids' a packed lunch in the morning. I'm not lazy, just not a morning person - and now with a 12 week old baby I really don't have the time to be making butties and remembering drinks before school. I pay just under £8 a week for the Junior meals and it'll even out to a couple of quid a day for my older girl - not a problem financially but I do feel kinda ripped off when my eight year old day after day comes out with 'I ate *a bit* of my dinner but not much...

She came home one day before the holidays and all she'd had was ONE piece of bread and butter because she didn't like anything else on the menu - she's not a fussy eater at all and will basically scoff anything that's put in front of her so something is deffo going wrong somewhere...

I'm less experienced as a parent, but I know for sure that our 3yr old lad doesn't need fizzy drinks.

In fact, though he'll have them occassionally, we try to avoid them. A recent report has confirmed the addiditives in Fizzy drinks and other processed foods contribute to hyperactivity, but just through my limited experience with our lad, I know this to be the case.

Sometimes, after certain drinks or sweets you'd have though he'd just had a sack of some sort of illegal stimulant. And the effect is almost instantaneous.

We'll take him for an occassional trip to pizza hut or Frankies, certainly won't worry about that. But a vast part of his diet is pretty darn healthy. It sounds obvous but it's all about balance. Yep kids need a certain amount of sugar, salt and fat, but not every meal, and I really don't think some of the additives (colour, preservatives and flavours) are a neccessary diet - the prob is they make food last longer, can taste good, and look better.

Stacy the reason we didn't have the problems with obesity and hyperactivity when we were kids is because there wasn't as many additives and preservatives in food, there was no such thing as GM foods, we got meat fresh from a butchers, veg from a green grocers, supermarkets sold tins, packet foods and non perishables, its not government brain washing at all, people wanted things to last longer so they added stuff and it works out the the stuff is bad for us, so its up to us to change it back and get healthy again!! And if that means stopping my kids eating crap then so be it, I'd rather 'deprive' them of this now to help them live longer!
And in answer to your questions, yes I work, I have 3 kids, 2 in school and a 2 year old, I'm not a single parent now but was this time last year and it wasn't any harder or easier then, I just think that people are too quick to point fingers and find excuses.

And dewberry, I hate mornings too lol ;-)
