At the end of Shutter Island did it turn out he actually was mental and had killed her or that he was 'normal' and they'd made him believe it? My little brain can't decide and I'm dead confused about it ... plus it's driving me mad not knowing!!!

Urgh I've watched this - Heylin1234 made me (she knows I don't like Leo).
I think she was the one who was mental and killed her kids and then he killed her but then had a breakdown and blocked it out from ever happening and created his alter ego which was why he ended up there.
They just tried to help him remember but he keeps reverting back to blocking it out.
I could be wrong but that's the way I saw it. Helen can probably let you know when she gets back from her hols on Sunday - she even bought the book to take with her

I quite enjoyed it ... until it got to the end! I hate films that make you think lol.
I wasn't sure if he really was a Marshall and they conned him into believing he'd done those things by messing with his mind ... I don't get how he met that Rachel woman in the cave in the cliff side if he was blocking out reality as she said they'd done the same to her (made out like she needed sectioning).

I don't think they were conning him - his wife had killed the kids but he'd completely removed himself from the whole thing so it was as though it was another woman he didn't know. I think cave woman was in on it - was her name not one of the ones rearranged into his wifes name? They'd just replaced her with someone else during the storm.

HC is correct about most but at the end he was cured but made out that he wasnt to the doctors

he was put in there because he murdered his wife, the marshall thing happened because he was one before and created a story in his head with his new name, rachel wasnt real he made her up because he didn't like knowing he didnt pick up on the signs his wife would kill the kids
at the end he went back to how he was before so wasn't cured

in the book he says again they have to find a way off the island back home, asks chuck if they think they are onto them and he says they are too smart for them
he still thinks they are partners and are stuck all over again
