Unhappy First Woolies, now Zavvi is placed into administration

How sad. Zavvi seemed quite decent, it was sad enough when the Virgin Megastore brand disappeared... they had some good bargains for DVD boxsets and console bundle deals and stuff I think. I wonder if they'll do the same as Woolies and sell off alot of stock cheap to get rid of it then(?) perhaps there will be more bargains from that but its still sad...

    Zavvi placed into administration

Music, games and DVD chain Zavvi has gone into administration, Ernst & Young has announced, threatening 3,400 jobs.

The troubled chain has been badly affected by the demise of Woolworths, which forced it to stop taking new orders via its website.

Zavvi's main supplier is Woolworths' unit Entertainment UK (EUK), which went into administration on 27 November.

All of Zavvi's stores should be open as normal on Boxing day, for its traditional post-Christmas sale.

The retailer is the latest victim of the slump in High Street sales that has seen the administrators called in at tea and coffee specialist Whittards and menswear chain The Officers Club.

It employs 2,363 permanent staff and 1,052 temporary staff.

Zavvi Ireland is not currently subject to any formal insolvency proceedings.

    Problems at Woolworths

Since Entertainment UK went into administration, Zavvi has had difficulties in sourcing stock and has been forced to enter new trading arrangements.

"This has resulted in considerable working capital difficulties," an Ernst & Young statement said.

"Since EUK went into administration, and perhaps before, the impact of problems at EUK on the Zavvi group has been significant.

"Minimal deliveries, no returns and worse trading terms are just some of the areas impacted," said joint administrator Tom Jack.

"In the absence of a buyer for EUK, and with dire trading conditions on the High Street, the Zavvi group has seen a material fall in sales and the directors have now been forced to place parts of the group into administration," he added...

Sorry if this was already posted but I couldn't see it mentioned on the forums(?)

Well I heard that Comet and B&Q aren't accepting Kingfisher gift vouchers now, so Woolworths is the only store that accepts them and their going bust. I hope nobody has bought any Kingfisher vouchers as presents, or the recipient will have to go out and spend it/them pretty quick!

Over the next month there will be a shed load of high street names going under. If you've got vouchers - use them soon folks.

Basically the companies have quite a bit of cash at the min (post Christmas - and banks don't like to see this cash frittered away over the rest of the year by loss making businesses, so it's a good time to call in debts.

    Sad but true.

I heard someone say that around or up to 15 stores could announce their going into administration in January... sigh... oh well, what can you do?! I got a Boots gift card from my grandparents and I went to look for stuff to buy with it but there wasn't anything for the total amount I wanted, I just got something small for a couple of quid and thought I'll use it through the next couple of months or so when I need to buy more basic toiletries and the like but it does make you wonder... Boots have been around for ages though, you wouldn't think it'd be likely for them to go under, would it? (the thing is, I'm also aware that by even mentioning or discussing such things, it can make things worse, if consumers lose confidence in shopping or investing in particular shops it makes the situation worse for said shops, its like a vicious cycle).

Oh well, uh Happy New Year everyone - lets hope things don't turn out to be as bad as some maybe fear...
