Agreed. We do love supermarkets because they're convenient, but how is it that even when there are so-called price wars that all supermarkets make mind-blowing profits.

I know when we're out and about now we always try to shop at small suppliers. Bakers - butchers etc. You generally get a much better deal and nice fresh produce too.

And for veg - DEF go to a market. The difference in what you pay is absolutely unbelievable. If they mark up fruit and veg by so much - it's an indication on the mark up on the other stuff that's more difficult to compare.

I'm getting fedup with small wage increases (every new tax year) & MASSIVE living increases.

To eat costs a fortune now for 2 people not only that eatting healthy, looking after yourself is becoming more important over time with new studies and so on yet to eat healthy it costs you times 3!

Where to start! I think this section was made for me!

My bugbear is supermarkets in general and Tesco in particular. In fact I successfully sued them last year - they failed to abide by nationwide company policy. I won, but got a Nationwide ban in the process

Did people know that big manufacturers like Coka-Cola or Procter & Gamble have to pay for shelf space in Supermarkets? Sort of a bribe to make sure the store will display their produce!

When your local store has a BOGOF offer on it's not Tesco that foots the bill, it's the manufacturers of the product. So if, for example, Covent Garden Soup are on a buy one get one free it will be because the store has told them it's going to happen, and that the Covent Garden Soup Co will be paying for the privelage.

Milk and Egg prices are steadily rising yet producers have never been so badly off, I believe (don't quote me verbatim) dairy farmers get just 35p per gallon of milk produced - the same amount is currently selling for around £2.30 in store. Bring back the Milk Marketing board I say!

Hi bontcho, glad you like the new section. Great for a rant, and there's worse times to come , so should be popular.

Some great points there, there supermarkets power is incredible. You've gotta feel sorry for suppliers!

How is it that when there's a squeeze on farmers and prices are increasing because of fuel and cos the chinese are eating more meat (so we're told), Tesco are raking in £5825 profit every minute.
Tesco made record profits of £2.8billion last year - £5,285 every MINUTE.
That's a 10 per cent increase on the previous year, the supermarket chain will announce next month.

If there was proper competition, surely with the rising costs, normally profits would be squeezed, it wouldn't all come out of our pockets?

Not sure we can blame the supermarkets for veg oil going up, after all it's in huge demand now for use making Bio Diesel!

Just do what an increasing number of the population are doing, shun the big name stores and shop at the likes of Netto, lidl and Aldi, much better value for money.
