Angry 5p rise for a first class stamp !!! Beginning of the end of snail mail and royal mail

    Breaking news.

It's just been announce the royal mail will be putting up the price of a first class stamp by 5p to 46p!!!! That's a 12% increase (by my workings).

How the hell do they justify that? Plugging a hole in a pension pot? Fat cat salaries? How is it we could do it so much more efficiently (twice daily) and cheaply 20 years ago!?

Well if they're trying to raise more money, a rise 4 times that of the price of inflation is going to massively reduce the amount of people willing to pay it.

Royal mail, you've really shot yourself in the foot this time.

    Really can't believe it. 12%!!!!!

    What do you think?

Well it depends what you're wanting to send. If you want to post a card you've no other choice than to pay it (well unless you want to pay a silly price for a courier instead )

It's 98c (63p) to sent a card from US to UK. It's 97p to send a card from UK to US

Understand if you have to send something, but I think more and more will be tempted to send an email, linking up on facetime, fire over an sms, msn or facebook chat, have an xbox kinect party, go for a pint etc etc

I understand snail mail is under pressure from many directions, but can't help thinking increasing your prices by that amount isn't going to solve their woes.

That's an interesting fact about UK to US pricing. Says a lot really.

Just incase anyone is wondering, the stamp price increase will start on 4th April 2011 so start buying them now!

    2nd class stamps will rise by 4p = 36p
Large letter will rise by 9p = 75p (first class) and by 7p to make it 58p 2nd class

Parcel prices under 2kg will stay the same but will increase by 8% for parcels over 2kg.

Special delivery is going to rise by 40p! Making it £5.45!

Royal Mail will also introduce of a charge of £210 a year for customers to collect mail from their delivery office after 8.30am.

    Special Delivery £5.45

This better make it EXTRA special. They best carry it on a silk cushion, walk to the house on a red carpet and personaly PLACE IT into the receivers hand for that cost!!!

I recently sent sometime RECORDED DELIVERY to someone... they got the parcel RIPPED and the box all DAMAGED!! I didn't pay £8.48 for them to treat my package like a piece of (errmmm...) meat!?!

Ps. My new Avatar fits PERFECTLY with my reaction to this news!!

Recorded delivery is not worth the 75p (unless you're selling on ebay and keep your fingers crossed they actually get a signature for it).

All you need is the Proof of Posting receipt and you're covered up to 10 times the price of a first class stamp.

Hmph, I can't say im overjoyed at this news, though it doesn't come as a surprise to me really. Easter every year, they seem to increase prices and we hear in the news about how the Royal Mail is in trouble... I've complained about the price rises elsewhere and only got a response of 'stop complaining, do you know how much your getting for however-many-p - its not feasible to provide this service for any less, their already in millions of debt - what do you expect?' etc., which makes me feel a bit guilty for complaining... wow I didn't realise how much the basic larger letter (up to 100g etc.) stamps are now, I thought they were (at least originally) just under 50p, 48p or something?!
