we knew it was going to cost alot so we were preapred but omg at the price for new drivers!!
my 17 yr old son passed his driving test a few weeks ago he has a 2001 fiat siquento 1100cc (nasty thing) to have me as a main driver and him as second (all legal hubby owns car/log book ) it costs £2300
he is in 6th form and working part time at mcdonalds so he can pay for it but what a rip off!!
I've been driving for 6 years now but 'cos I'm under 25 mine still costs loads.
Insurance works in funny ways tho... you may find it cheaper if you put the car in his name. It was cheaper for me when I transfered the logbook of my old car which was original my dad's name into my name with me as the only driver.
I found direct line to be the cheapest by far, even without cashback etc which they dont offer.
I remember when being a young driver, looking forward to being older so my car insurance would become cheap. Well it hasn't!!!!
I suspect massive price fixing in the insurance industry. A mate I was talking to was just talking about his wife's insurance.
Somebody crashed into her car when it was parked up. Obviously not her fault and it was settled by the other person's car insurance. However when it came to renewal they still whacked her installments up arguing that because she had one (no fault) claim, it's more likely to happen again!?!?!? What the hell is that all about?

Is it any wonder some people don't bother getting insurance?! The fine if you get caught is waaaay less than your premiums. Is there not a governing body that can step in and stop them ripping us off so much?
My first car was insured with Direct Line too, have you got a quote off them Calloo? Like Phil said, it can be cheaper to insure him as the named driver as that's what I did first time too.
Hiya I'm new on this site so I havent put my picture up but this post caught me eye and I wanted to give you an answer!
Your sons insurance should not be that high, I passed my driving test in 2006 at the age of 18 and brought a 1994 corsa with a 1.4i engine and my mother was first driver and me 2nd and the insurance was around about £800.00
I soold my car and did not drive until this year in July 2010 when I graduated from University and brought a 2002 red ford ka, milage is 42,000 miles with an engine of 1.3. I have registered myself as first driver and my mum as 2nd driver as this is the only way to build up your no claims as i could build up my own by putting myself as first driver. I am with diamond and am also paying around about £800.00!
Sorry to bore you all with my life story but I had quotes which were up to £3,000! I thought bugger paying that much! Just imagine if I hit into someone, my insurance would go up to about £10,000!
I think you should shop around and im sure thats a cheaper quote out there for you. I tried go compare.com which compares insurance companies for a cheaper quote. There are a lot of car insurance comparison sites which provide free comparisons!
Good luck and tell us how to get on!
P.s ask your son if he has watched the inbetweeners? Simon has a yellow fiat similar to your sons! however i hope your son's car is not bright canery yellow!

i asure everyone it is that high we tried everyone and i mean everyone you can do a fake one and i challenge anyone to find it cheaper i know you wont as like i say we went through everyone , even price comparison sites some were as high as 7k i guess that's because they don't want new drivers
we put hubby as main driver it went up , my son as main driver it was higher believe me we tried it all his friends have the same trouble it's how it is ,think radio one newsbeat did a feature on it a few weeks ago and i know this year they have shot up!!
apparently for girls it's cheaper
hi, feel so sorry for my daughter. She was thrilled when she passed her test, but so sad when we had the insurance quotes. All over a grand and a half! We just cant afford it so couldn't insure her
I think this adds argument to some of the suggestions that came out last week. e.g. No passengers allowed if a young person (who's a new driver) is driving after a certain time, zero tolerance on alcohol, even use special "newly passed" plates - as long as part of all this means hugely reduced insurance premiums.

My daughter passed 2 yrs ago and we can't afford to insure her either, she's desperate to drive, I told her to wait till she's 21 this Nov and try again for a quote, it's ridiculous how they rip the kids off!!
my son got himself a part time job to pay for insurance, in august it will have been a year since he passed ...gutting thing is his female friends dont pay that much although i do hear that has to stop now so hopefully it will be lower this year for his sake most of his wages go on insurance!!! we could help but its very important in our eyes he pays for this himself as did we at that age
but its harder now kids are finding it almost impossible to find work ...hard times
