    Default Bank Charges

Natwest have charged me for going overdrawn in a basic account when it was their fault i went overdrawn in the first place...i just seem to be putting in money to pay for my charges lately.

Time to find a new account me thinks and tell Natwest to get stuffed!

If they charged you a ridiculous disproportionate amount of charges, you should be able to claim them back.

The bank charges ruling explained - Spend & Save , Money - The Independent

I for one am in a minority here in saying that if you accept these charges when you open your account/overdraft service, then moan about paying them and whinge when you cannot get the charges back, then tough poo! If your silly enough to let yourself get into such a situation, then you pay the AGREED charges.

Im all for the banks here on this one, sorry folkes.

I can def see your point of view and would normally agree, but it bugs me how merciless the banks are. I think everybody has had the situation where they've made an error, or something has come out earlier than others.

The more skint you are, the less of a margin of error there is. So imagine the situation where a mum of 4 with a part time job earning £100 PW goes a quid overdrawn for whatever reason. The bank slaps on a £35 charge straight away. I think that's excessive - especially as it's essential to have a bank nowadays to avoid getting stung for not having DDebits for utilities etc.

I think a better solution would be for the bank to simply not allow the overdraft, rather than allow it and use the "fines" mostly paid by the unfortunate, to fund free banking for the rich.

    Just IMO.

Hi ya Ive also had this problem with halifax and when I was £1.99 overdrawn, they were charging me up to £35.00 for each day until i paid it back!

I think the best thing to do is to pay all them oney back and close your account down. Tell them this is the reason why and you feel as though they are being unfair and unreasonable.

Secondly, you need to keep an eye out on what you spend and keep checking your bank balance regulary as this prevents any overspending and any excess overdrawn fees.
