Train fares to go up AGAIN!!!
Train fares to go up in new year
Rail passengers talk about their journeys and the cost of tickets
Rail passengers face fare rises in the new year, with some tickets in England, Scotland and Wales going up by double the rate of inflation.
Regulated and unregulated fares are to increase by averages of 6% and 7% respectively from 2 January 2009.
'Special case'
However, passengers reliant on Southeastern services between London and Kent and Sussex will see their fares rise by an average of 8%, which is 2% more than the national average.
Lucky there's loads of money going around - not!

It's a bit odd that the most polluting is the cheapest and the least polluting most expensive. At the same time they're taxing us out of cars (cos they're polluting) onto the ridiculously expensive trains. I must missing something.

This is really bad news for me. I am reliant on southeastern Kent to London services and I didn't realise my fares would be going up more than the national average. The fact that I was so fed up with the rubbish service that I made an official complaint earlier in the week makes it even worse!
But what can you do? Nothing. It's not like I can boycott using their trains, it's how I get to work. The train companies know this and whether they run a good or bad service for their customers is inconsequential to them, people still have to use them either way. It's one of the few sectors that can get away with this.

Agree totally. It seems that any companies that have monopolies are intent on ripping us off. Energy, rail, water. One day somebody will find a way of making a serious protest that hurts these companies.

Cheaper to drive...
I've just been looking at train fares from Cardiff Central to Bournemouth for late Feb (and even tried breaking the journey in stages to see if I can get a better deal) but basically it's about £50 return off-peak. At that rate, it's cheaper for me to drive!
I don't like doing it as I'd much rather get the train but I'm not spending £50 for it to take over 4 hours to get home on Sunday when I can drive it in just under 3. Very disappointed, even the cheap £17 returns from London Waterloo to Bournemouth have gone.
For the same cost as the train fare, I could fly return Cardiff to Edinburgh!

its maybe not the best example, but,
Yarmouth to Norwich - not far - 20 miles?
used to be a £4.50 return - a stonking £5.90 now! this is over the course of a year or so!!!
maybe its only £1.90 in this case as a percentage thats a 42% hike!!!

Truly disgusting. Isn't the government supposed to be encouraging us to use greener public transport?
