Default Saving money on a fax roll

A weird challenge for you guys and I expect won't be achievable.

We've a fax machine that uses a roll. It's such a daft design as when it's printing blank pages (which often happens) it's not using ink but wasting the roll.

When the chip that comes with the roll thinks the roll has been used you have to buy a new one. This is despite the fact the roll can be turned back and re-used with no prob.

It's a philips magic 3 - 2 fax machine. And the error displayed says "card invalid - change card".

I know we're penny pinching here, but it's a principle. It's designed to make you buy ink rolls even when you don't need one.

A work around would be appreciated.

this problem rings a bell with our old machine. We now have one that uses A4 paper.

If I remember I'll ask my Dad next time I speak to him to see if he remembers.

    Sorry for the gash explaination.

It is A4 paper, but the chip is related to an ink roll. So the idea is, it measures how much roll is used per a4 sheet and it thinks it knows when the ink roll is used. So if it prints just a date on the fax, it still uses an a4 area of roll.

Just a scam really. Never buy one!

Can't help thinking there's a way. I reckon the chip hasn't been altered, just that the fax knows that that chip's been used.

I know it would be easy just to order a new one, but that's no fun.

Thinking more about ours I'm sure we used to roll it back up and reuse it because I remember seeing the old fax text marked on the roll.

I'm guessing it didn't have chip, but I'l find out.

Would be good to stick two fingers up to them and work out a way to reuse it!
